How far will we go to pursue success? Is our persistence humorous, tragic, or both?
Megan Dickie’s One Way or Another confronts failure in our quest for excellence. Using humour as an artistic weapon, Dickie works with sculpture and video to construct a series of vivid scenarios that are immersive, illogical, and ultimately futile.
Dickie’s sweeping structures dominate space through their scale and construction–meticulous and unnatural. In a set of videos, a masked feminine figure moves through clunky obstacles inspired by 1980s video games. Repeated patterns create a consuming and seemingly endless environment of pursuit. Dickie’s installation draws us into our own obstacle course, forcing us to consider the absurdity of competition, and ultimately, to see the humour it.
One Way or Another opens January 13, at 7:30 p.m. at Open Space and continues until Saturday, February 18. Megan Dickie will present an artist talk, paired with the launch of the exhibition catalogue, on February 11 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Also on February 11, Megan Dickie will co-host a workshop with the West Coast League of Lady Wrestlers where participants will develop personas and learn wrestling choreography. The workshop fee is $5-$10 sliding scale, no one turned away. Please email office@openspace.ca to register. Details to follow
