Description
Within the world of music, there are some composers who are well- known. Names such as Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart are widely known. However, names such as Marius Flothuis, Hans Gál, and Milkós Rózsa are not so common. One thing these composers share is that the Third Reich had suppressed their music for ideological reasons. Far too often music that has been suppressed doesn’t reach as wide an audience as it could have and remains as “hidden gems” within the available repertoire. Suzanne Snizek is dedicated to bringing voice to these compositions.
On Thursday, November 10, 2016 at 8 p.m. Open Space will host flutist and University of Victoria Assistant Professor of Music, Suzanne Snizek, presenting a concert featuring diverse solo flute works, written by composers Flothuis, Gál, Rózsa. This concert will also feature an incredibly powerful newly commissioned work for the flute and electronics, If this is a Man... written by Vancouver based Iranian Canadian composer, Farshid Samandari. The work is inspired by a famous poem (titled “Shema”) by Italian poet and Holocaust survivor Primo Levi
