The City of Victoria’s creative partnership with Open Space Arts Society has transformed the west wall of the Youth Empowerment Society building in Commercial Alley’s busy thoroughfare into an accessible, outdoor public art gallery. On Friday, August 15, in conjunction with the Integrate Arts Festival, the alley located between the 500 block of Yates Street and Bastion Square will feature Commercial Alley’s second installation of four new works by painter, performance artist, and poet Roy Green.
Green’s commissioned works will feature a four-panel quartet of birds both iconic and indigenous to Vancouver Island: the great blue heron, the pileated woodpecker, the rufous hummingbird, and the red-winged blackbird. As with the inaugural work by Other (a.k.a. Troy Lovegates), Green’s painted depictions will be installed on the west wall of the Victoria Youth Empowerment Society, this time to enliven the space for six months.
Green’s series not only captures the spirit of some of the island’s favourite winged cousins but also speaks to humanity’s timeless preoccupation with flight and admiration of birds, evidenced throughout the histories of art, symbolism, and spirituality.
Roy Green was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, and graduated from the Emily Carr College of Art in 1984. Since that time, he has exhibited his work extensively and is represented in many private and public collections, such as the Canada Council Art Bank, the Richmond Art Gallery, the Nanaimo Art Gallery, and Camosun College. He has received several grants and awards, including a Canada Council Project Grant in 2012. In 2014 he has had two solo exhibitions: Mummer at the Fifty Fifty Art Collective in February and Jolly Velocity at Polychrome Fine Arts in April. In October, Green will show his latest works on paper, Vortex of Amulets, at the Ministry of Casual Living.
