Description
Virtuoso shō (Japanese mouth organ) player Naomi Sato presents a lecture/recital on this traditional Japanese instrument. The shō consists of reeds in bamboo pipes and is one of the three primary woodwind instruments in Japan’s imperial court music. This informative recital will appeal to people interested in traditional instruments, professional musicians, and composers. As part of this event, composer Farshid Samandari will offer insights into his experience writing a new work for shō and electronics.
Through performance and discussion, Naomi will illustrate contemporary uses of this traditional instrument and bring insight to the instrument that is rumoured to imitate the call of a phoenix.
This event is part of CHRYSANTHEMUMS & MAPLE LEAVES A Mini- Festival Celebrating Japanese Music in Canada May 7-19, 2013 and is presented in partnership with the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra.
