Representing the Personal was a two-night symposium composed of screenings, artist talks, and a book launch hosted by MediaNet and Open Space.

The symposium looked at the ways in which artists Deirdre Logue (Toronto), Farheen Haq (Victoria), and Lysanne Thibodeau (Montreal) incorporate events, images, and memories from their own lives into their works.

On June 21, we screened films and videos by Deirdre Logue and Farheen Haq and a short work by Lysanne Thibodeau followed by a discussion with the artists on their film/video practices.

On June 22, there was a reception and book launch for MediaNet's new publication at 5:30 p.m. followed by a screening of works by Lysanne Thibodeau at 7 p.m.

Crossing Channels: Essays on Contemporary Media Art in British Columbia

MediaNet and Open Space hosted the launch of MediaNet’s new publication on media art in British Columbia. The book contains essays by Jennifer Cane, Marie Prince, Bracken Hanuse Corlett, and Catlin Lewis on media artists and centres in Vancouver, Victoria, and the Interior.

“The landscape of BC is diverse, with mountains, ocean, forests and an inland desert. So, too, are the works produced here. Media artists grasp onto new ideas and technologies and shape them to their needs. Media arts are one of the fastest changing and most exciting forms of creative expression.”
