Description
Inspired by the art and design of skateboard ramps, Steve deBruyn is in Victoria for a two week residency to create his most ambitious project to date; a gravity defying ramp installation in Open Space that pushes the boundaries of the form itself. Employing a haptic construction sensibility the artist is building a giant sized, double-looped plywood python that takes the art of skateboard ramps beyond the functional and into the terrain of architecture, amusement parks and public sculpture. Working with his preferred medium, recycled and reclaimed plywood, 2x4’s and old panelling found around Victoria, combined with an array of collected mistint paints and reams of masking tape, deBruyn is transforming Open Space into a skateboarder’s pipe dream, a landscape of moves that will challenge the imagination to fly through an impossible double roller-coaster-style loop.
