This summer Open Space investigates the complicated relationships to natural and artificial ecosystems through a series of artists’ projects. The urban biome is overrun with greenish initiatives, proposals, visions, solutions and gimmicks. Greenw∞sh sifts the diversity of habits, philosophies and attitudes toward community ecosystems that shape daily cultural practices: eating, having fun, getting around, gardening, obsessing over yard care, and solving the simple problem of finding a free drink of water downtown. Join us for a fecund, and at times weedy, summer of conversations and artists’ projects with:
• Kyath Battie (Toronto) drawing us into digital geographies and landscapes, foregrounding an iconic single tree image.
• Scott Evans (Victoria) artist-in-residence at the Greater Victoria Compost Education Centre and Open Space, where his process-orientated work will be evolving during the residency.
• Rachel Evans (Victoria) choreographing an arduous walk, Prove it like a Penguin, mobilizing the human penchant to anthropomorphize.
• Robert Hengeveld (Toronto) examining the lawn as a technological construct.
• Artist-cartographer, Marlene Jess (Victoria), mapping the current and extinct sources
of drinking water in downtown Victoria.
• Xane St. Phillip (Victoria) managing a studio devoted to the evolution of a green wall
proposal.
