Sound artist Kathy Kennedy (Montreal) was commissioned by Open Space and CFUV 101.9 FM Community Campus Radio to compose a community voice work for the 4th annual Open Space Voice ++ Festival. The work was a vocal swarm through the streets of Victoria during the week of the festival May 3–10, 2008. As the first phase in creating the piece, Kathy Kennedy visited Victoria on Sunday February 24 to meet with interested participants and to give a voice workshop at Open Space. Everyone was welcome, regardless of level of experience with voice.
Kathy Kennedy is a sound artist with a background in classical singing. Her art practice generally involves the voice and issues of interface with technology, often using telephony or radio. She is also involved in community art and is a founder of the digital media center for women in Canada, Studio XX, as well as the innovative choral group for women Choeur Maha. Her large-scale site-specific sonic installation/performances for up to 100 singers and radio, called "sonic choreographies," have been performed internationally including the inauguration of the Vancouver New Public Library and at the Lincoln Center's Out of Doors Series.
Kathy Kennedy’s vocal workshops were for singers, performers, teachers, radio personalities and anyone who uses their voice. Her workshops were aimed at giving participants the opportunity to listen deeply to their own vocal sounds, through exercises that help participants hear vocal sound inside their own bodies as well as hearing it in other environments and contexts.
Kathy Kennedy’s solo performances included a high level of improvisation over lush soundtracks of painstakingly mixed vocals and other sounds to create an immersive world of different voices.
