Quantal Strife is an invitation to consider contemporary artworks as “signposts to
a thought process, a body of knowledge, or a frame of reference.” The exhibition, curated by artist/critic/writer Sally McKay, samples the work of three artists: Scott Carruthers, Crystal Mowry and Marc Ngui. In addition, a special sound event in conjunction with Quantal Strife will be performed on January 28. Quantal Strife continues to March 6.
These three artists each take a distinctive path to investigate artistic preoccupations. Commix artist Scott Carruthers works fast to bypass self-censorship, filling entire walls with his immersive and intense iconography. Crystal Mowry has created a miniature version of the gardens at Versailles that features a tiny camera mounted on a toy-sized carriage, broadcasting the hypothetical point of view of tiny people. Marc Ngui has been making drawings based on concepts in the hefty theoretical tome A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari.
Meet all three artists and Sally McKay at the opening reception for Quantal Strife on Friday, January 25 at 8pm. If you’d like to learn more about the artists’ work and the project, join us for an informal conversation with the artists on Saturday, January 26 at 12noon. We’ll be serving a late continental breakfast.
Curatorial talk Saturday, January 19 7pm.
Sally McKay, a nationally recognized curator, will be in residence at Open Space from January 19 to February 9. While in residency, McKay will develop an exhibition, visit artists and lead
a public discussion on the changing nature of art criticism. She would like to meet as many Vicotria Artists as she can while in residence, and plans to develop an exhibition based on the work she encounters. Sally McKay’s office hours for drop-in visits: Wednesday and Thursday,
