Description
François Lamontagne and François Mathieu have transformed Open Space into a working studio. Both artists are from Quebec City and will be in residence until February 26. Mathieu and Lamontagne have been invited to Victoria to investigate the theme “the transmission of knowledge.” François Lamontagne is working with sound while François Mathieu has focused on the architectural details.
François Lamontagne is a visual artist who works with sound and music. He has been working— playing—with local musicians and stocking his improvised studio. Since arriving in mid-January, Lamontagne has built a two-string instrument and has collected small, everyday objects
that generate an array of sounds. By the close of the residency, he plans a performance that constitutes a sound space or sound sculpture. Lamontagne is fascinated by how personal memory is formed by sound, “I would like to record sonorities that come from their environment as well as [the sounds] of people doing favorite activities.” Therefore, he has invited people to participate in the creation of musical pieces (no matter if they have experience or not) in order to implicate place and locale.
